Around 200 citizens visited the mobile information centre of the Federal Office for Radiation Protection BfS) on the occasion of the 7th Braunschweig Moonlight-shopping. On Saturday, 20 March 2010, between 5 p.m. and 11 p.m., BfS provided information at the Kohlmarkt in Braunschweig about the current state of the Asse mine’s decommissioning process.
BfS also informed about the Konrad nuclear repository where low-level and intermediate-level radioactive waste is to be disposed of from 2015. Furthermore, general questions relating to the disposal of radioactive waste could be answered in the mobile information centre. Many visitors wanted to know where the waste from Asse will be taken after it has been retrieved. Another frequently asked question was when retrieval operations would start. Two staff members of the Asse information centre accounted for the numerous questions.
Visitors who had not been very familiar with the topic used the opportunity to watch filmlets on the state of and the problems relating to the Asse II mine and on the result of the comparison of the possible decommissioning options. A film about a tour inside the mine provided impressions of the current situation underground.
Altogether the visitors appeared to be very satisfied with what was offered. Repeatedly they requested to further develop this form of transparent information policy.
