To be able to make a decision on a solid basis as to which option is most suited for the decommissioning of Asse, BfS has developed evaluation criteria. The Asse II Accompanying Group, the Comparison of Options Working Group, and BMU had the opportunity to contribute suggestions and recommendations. A large number of these recommendations were taken up in the catalogue of criteria. To offer all citizens the opportunity to comprehend the decision-making process, BfS has published the catalogue of criteria in the internet.
The catalogue contains 18 criteria the individual options are evaluated with. The decommissioning options must match the following issues:
- Safety in the operational phase
- Impacts on the environment in case of an uncontrollable inflow of brine
- Preliminary long-term safety assessment
- Time required
To be able to apply the criteria to the individual options, BfS ordered out feasibility studies for each decommissioning option. The authors presented these studies on the occasion of a public workshop. At the same time they were published in the internet. In January 2010, BfS published the result of the feasibility studies’ evaluation and, thus, specified the option to be further pursued. This was done in coordination with the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety. The public have the possibility to discuss this selection and to ask questions, make suggestions, and raise objections.
